The Equality Initiative, together with its flagship Equal by 30 campaign, proudly celebrates its prominent recognition at the inaugural G20 Energy Transitions Working Group (ETWG) Women in Energy Breakfast, held on 1 August 2025 in Sun City, South Africa. This historic milestone reflects the growing global momentum for greater gender representation in the energy sector and reaffirms our shared commitment to building a just and inclusive clean energy future.
We extend our sincere thanks to the Republic of South Africa and the Department of Electricity and Energy for their leadership in making inclusivity a central pillar of the G20 ETWG agenda. As Deputy Minister Samantha Graham-Maré noted in her inspiring opening remarks, the energy transition is “about inclusivity, justice, and the bravery to create an energy future in which no one falls behind.”
The event marked the launch of a Call to Action from South Africa to G20 leaders to accelerate women’s participation across all levels of the energy sector. We were honored that the Equality in Energy Transitions Initiative (EETI), the Equal by 30 campaign, and our Implementing Inclusivity Framework were highlighted as essential tools guiding governments toward gender-sensitive policymaking.
The urgency is undeniable. Today, women make up only 20% of the global energy sector workforce, with far fewer in technical and leadership roles. Yet, as the Deputy Minister emphasized, women bring technical expertise, community-centered solutions, and leadership perspectives that drive innovation, improve decision-making, and ensure that the benefits of the clean energy transition reach the most vulnerable.
Our presence in this global conversation reaffirms the value of partnership and collective action. Together, with the leadership of countries like South Africa and partner organizations, we can ensure that the clean energy transition delivers not only on climate goals but also on its promise of social justice and gender equality.
The Equality Initiative and Equal by 30 are proud to stand at the forefront of this movement, and to work tirelessly so that everyone has a seat at the table and an equal opportunity to lead.
