Misinformation is a growing threat, but existing research focuses disproportionately on individual drivers of susceptibility such as low media literacy skills or membership of echo chambers. However, some of the most compelling false narratives are often based on kernels of truth, reflecting the fact that susceptibility is also driven by material factors such as financial barriers, experience of discrimination, availability of high quality news in your own language and inequality. This presentation will introduce attendees to a novel systems model for assessing the drivers of mis/disinformation and provide an overview of strategies to effectively counter it, with a focus on mis/disinformation related to climate change.
