Tripling Global Renewable Energy Capacity – How do we proceed?

October 31, 2023 – October 31, 2023
04:00 pm – 06:00 pm

Register here for the pre-COP28 talk organized by the campaign Women Energize Women from the german Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action.

GUIDING QUESTION:
How can we triple annual renewable energy capacity development globally?

GUIDING SUBQUESTIONS:
What action needs to be taken to increase renewables deployment?
Which infrastructure, policy and regulations need to be designed?
Which workforce capabilities are needed and how can we step them up?
What are the roles and responsibilities of national and regional entities, international organisations, international financial institutions and multilateral development banks?
How is increased energy access linked to gender equality?
Why do we need to consider SDG5 (gender equality and empowerment of women and girls) in our quest of achieving SDG7?

OUTLINE:
According to the Annual Renewables Outlook by IRENA, a tripling of annual renewable energy capacity is needed in order to achieve the global 1.5° goal. The report calls for raised global ambition in renewables deployment, enabled by physical infrastructure, policy, and regulations, and underlining institutional and workforce capabilities. Adding speed and scale to the energy transition requires rewriting international cooperation. It also means ensuring that funds reach the world’s most vulnerable. Not only will a massive increase in renewable energy capacity contribute to combatting climate change, but also will it advance Sustainable Development Goal 7 – affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all. The sobering results of the recent halftime analysis of the progress in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals 2016-2030 call for decisive action in order to achieve universal energy access.

With a few weeks to go until COP28 takes place and the world comes together to negotiate the next steps for climate action, this #womenenergize online event aims to explore ideas on how to best proceed to reach this ambitious goal of tripling renewables.
