CEM Side Event: Gender Gaps in the Energy Sector – Roadblocks for an Inclusive Clean Enegry Transition

March 20, 2023 – March 20, 2023
08:00 am – 09:00 am

We are hosting a side event at the CEM Senior Officials’ Meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and are looking forward to see CEM / MI-delegates & -communities there to exchange effective strategies and challenges on how a clean energy transition can become more gender responsive, inclusive and thus more sustainable.

Ensuring equal rights for women and girls (SDG 5) is essential for achieving sustainable energy and securing universal access to energy. Globally, gender-responsive initiatives and programs have shown success in delivering sustainable and innovative energy solutions, as well as undisputable economic growth and industrial development.

Women in the energy workforce and as entrepreneurs face significant challenges to join, remain, and succeed in the energy sector. However, energy policies and planning often neglect gender perspectives, which can lead to the exacerbation of the existing inequalities. To combat this, it is vital to mainstream gender and build relevant competence in energy ministries, the public and private sectors, and academia. Accelerating gender equality and diversity and calling for immediate, concrete actions are crucial to achieving a just and inclusive clean energy transition.

This side event showcases how the Equality in Energy Transitions (Equality Initiative) is tackling the identified barriers—accelerating gender equality and diversity in clean energy transitions and closing the gender disparity gap by 2030. We cordially invite all interested stakeholders to join our session to learn more about the Equality Initiative’s activities and deliverables. During this session, we will discuss how international collaborations and the exchange of effective strategies and best practices can help overcome the current and upcoming obstacles that hinder gender equality in the energy industry and how we can work together to implement intersectional and inclusive measures and approaches across different sectors. Finally, this will be an opportunity to solicit ideas for how the Equality Initiative could urge more stakeholders to join its mission and call for immediate action at CEM14 in India.

This event will be closed door and only open to CEM / MI-delegates & -communities.
