About this event

2021 saw Kamala Harris become the first female Vice President of the US. It also saw Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala becoming the first Director-General of the World Trade Organisation. In a year like this, it became essential that Lean In Energy (LIEN) was clear on its position regarding the gender disparities within the energy sector.

LIEN believes even more so now that – ‘representation matters’ and if you can’t see it, you can’t be it.

As part of IWD 2021 #choosetochallenge, LIEN chose to challenge the narrative of the lack of female talent in the energy industry. It is known that women are dramatically underrepresented in the energy workforce compared to other major industries. Why is this so? And what can the industry do about it?

Notwithstanding major hurdles to career advancement in the sector, women are making strides in the industry and on the continent. Against this backdrop, LIEN has launched a series of #HerStory roundtable panel discussions to showcase African Female Leaders and their careers.

We call this #modelsofopportunities and, through these stories – Inspire the next generation of Female Leaders.

Episode 1 of the series launched on Monday, May 17th, with leading female leaders in energy from East Africa. Episode 2 launched on Tuesday, June 15th, with leading female leaders from West Africa, and now going into country-specific roundtables from August starting with Uganda.
